Hey all, I'm new to this forum, but have been collecting for a few years. I came across this 1864 Indian Head cent, but can't tell if it's the famed "L" variety. There seems to be an object on the ribbon below the feathers, but can't say for sure if it's an "L". Any help, opinions or insight would be very helpful. Thanks, Dustin

 1864 "L" have a pointed bust, non "L" have a rounded bust.

It appears to be a pointed bust and I see something that could be the 'L', but with this much wear I can't be 100% positive. Recently, another 1864 IHC was posted that initially fooled many of us.

Yea, I am not certain either. The bust looks more pointed than most non "L"s, but not as pointed as some of the nicer "L"s I've seen photos of. There is a mark of some sort on the ribbon, but you are right, the wear makes it difficult to tell what it is for sure. Is there a way I can be more certain as to which variety this coin is?
Thanks,
Dustin

As far as I know that is the only diagnostic. You probably should have posted this under 'Classic US coins'. It would get more attention. Maybe the moderators can change it for you.

I think we need a picture from straight above in order to see the pointiness of the bust here is, by the way, the 1864 that fooled many in here...I decided eventually not to buy it... https://goccf.com/t/141662

Ok. Here is a top view photo of the IH. Hopefully this angle gives a little better perspective. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Dustin

It's hard to say for me. I know I've read before somewhere that it's easier to see the L if you're looking at the edge of the coin (with Lady Liberty facing you, like you're looking at each other) and then slowly rotate the coin like she's going to look over to your left. In good light this should work, my 1864-L is hard to see the L straight on, but turned like I have described it becomes very apparent to me - but each coin is different.

epikur, I never did see the new pic. Add me to the changing my mind to a no L with that new pic.
And this one also I would say no L based on the second pic.

I wish I had the ability to take a nicer & closer pic for you all to see. I've been viewing it through a 16x loop and it still seems like there are the remnants of an L to me. Of course the bust does not look as pointed as most of the "L" varieties I've seen. From the first pic I attached you can clearly see something at the top of the ribbon. What else could it be if it's not an "L" ?
