I have began listing on an excel spreadsheet all of the coins I have by dates and mint marks, proof sets, paper currency etc. I am up to 278 line items and have yet to go through the wheat pennies and quite a few foreign coins. What is the best way to sell a collection, whole or by piece?

If you're selling a single piece, it's hardly a collection. ;)

Pretty sure you have to have 250 posts to sell here. Id still.like to see your spreadsheet and comment on what sounds like an extensive collection. [welcome]

I understand about the posts, looking for some feedback and possible direction. @Libertad, I don't understand your comment "If you're selling a single piece, it's hardly a collection. ;)"

You're asking; "What is the best way to sell a collection, whole or by piece?", and Libertad is correct when he replies that if your selling by the piece, it is not a collection as purchasing a few pieces is not the same as purchasing a collection. If you want to sell at a huge discount, then selling the collection as a whole is your best option, and should you want to get the most for your collection then selling by the piece is the way to go (keeping in mind that there are more expenses involved selling by the piece).

I'd happily browse that thar spreadsheet. Keep in mind there are many, many non-USA coins that are hardy worth the effort selling one at a time, unless you are a shopowner with a 25c each or 5-for-a-buck bin. Perhaps insight could be gained if you were to post some representative group photos of what you have.

Think about this. A long time ago I started a spread sheet and listed for headings things like date, mint mark, condition, estimated value, date of purchse, where purchased, amount paid, in a set or loose, in a roll and lots of other headings. All sort of became a bit dumb. After about 30 to 60 years who cases where purchased. Or who sold it. Or where it's located. Or lots of other just STUFF. I eventually cut it all down to date, mint mark, grade.

I'm leaving this topic open so that folks can comment on "how" you should go about selling it. Every other comment by you and/or others pretty much soliciting sales in both directions, by a new member and from existing members, have been removed. Stick around for a while and you can sell here, but this will not be a hit and run venue for you to dispose of your collection. Buying and selling here is a privilege.

It depends on what you have really. If it is all common stuff it might be better to sell as a collection. If there are coins in there that have more value, they may get the highest price if you sell them individually. I think the best advice can't be given without knowing exactly what you have.. Just my opinion though. Good luck!

Piece by piece is more work but will yield highest net dollars.
