I'm fairly new to numismatics, having only collected seriously for a few months. My question revolves around Morgans more than anything else, but obviously applies to all silver coins. Right now, Morgans in G condition have a base of roughly $28-30. What happens if silver drops to $10 per oz? Would Morgans have a base in that ballpark? I wasn't collecting back when silver was cheap, so I don't have anything to compare this market to. Thanks for your help.

When silver was 15 dollars an ounce, I saw common, low grade Morgans bring 25 dollars at auction. It all depends on who's buying and where is the venue.

I would have to say yes. Silver drops and common Morgans drop. But if the dealers are spoiled at getting more, it doesn't mean they'd be willing to take less. I'm sure others will add more.

I forgot to say:

Thanks. I imagined there would be some more than just the intrinsic value of silver, I just wasnt sure how much. Besides getting my hands on old Red Books, is there anyway to look at historical prices of coins?

If you get them in the higher grades youll get a cushion from the numismatic premium but the common ones will probably still come down some. For the keydates in the series that cost a lot more than 30 right now they wouldnt be affected much if at all. The more common the coin the more its metal price will affect the value

with basebal21 and would add there would likely be a grade threshold for common dates to be not affected by a considerable drop in silver.
