Here's an very nice 1858 small date 5 cent coin. Too bad that both sides are a tad blurry here. Edited by DEVLEC 02/23/2013 4:50 pm

Probably SP63 or 64. What does the flip say?

Thanks for your expertize. I wish that I has some of your eyes when I was looking for key coins,...way back when all you did was grade with a 4x loop but view with a 7x loop. So this is a MS 62 business strike,..I guess soon after the dies were moved into regular coinage striking. Have any of you seen other "First Strike" from 1858 ? ... and is there much collectability with this added to the flip.?

Can anyone explain the difference between this and a specimen? I can't tell by looking at it

Hi everyone,
Hope you're all havin' a good day... :)
I'm not sure how anyone can determine whether a coin was the "last struck" specimen example, or the next "first struck" business strike use of die...
Take care, and Have a Great Weekend!

I think the most likely explanation is that Brian means it has prooflike qualities, due to being one of the first struck using the specimen dies. Similar to PL/DMPL Morgan dollars.

That's my feeling also. When the specimen dies run was up, they get moved over for use as regular business strikes and this piece happened to be of that "first batch" of business strikes and luckily this coin survived and was quickly removed from regular circulation.
This coin probably does not have all of the necessary "specimen" attributes but does have the necessary "business strike" attributes. Brian and a few others would know what those attributes would be.
