Was hoping some folks could provide some information on this note. What we find interesting is that its date is April 2 1776. Does the fact that this is rebel money (before the Declaration of Independence) make this a special note at all.

Also have a $4 from same date and a $8 from same date that is marked counterfeit.

1776:-NC-2-1/2-Dollar,-4-Dollar,-5-Dollar,-And-Counterfeit-8

Thank you.

The April 2 date refers to the beginning of the session of the North Carolina congress that authorized these Bills of Credit; the final authorization of the money was May 9, so getting close to Independence Day, and the $7 1/2 bill featured a US flag with 13 stripes, though a Union Jack in place of the stars. The vignette at lower left features a liberty cap over an altar; the motto reads "Liberty and our native land." Your bill was made official by the signatures of David Sumner, William Haywood, and William Williams. 10,000 of this denomination were printed.
I've said it before, your family had a collector after my own heart! Would love to see the $4, and especially that $8 contemporary counterfeit!

Here's a genuine example of the $8 (that you probably have to log in to the Heritage Auctions website to view). Yours would totally pass as legit, to me, even down to the signatures.

The others are great, too! They were all engraved by a Baltimore goldsmith named Lewyn, and the congress of North Carolina must have wanted to put this guy's kids through college; this issue of currency has more denomination varieties than any other American currency issue, at 56!
