Anyone have an idea what this one might be? It is wafer thin and 31 mm. I picked it up because I found it interesting and the "8" intrigued me.

Looks like Khwarezm Shahs (sometimes seen as "Khwarezmshah") billon Dinar, broad flan. Looks like Samarkand. Date not readable. 31 mm is about right. I have examples of these braod flan dirhems in greater than 40 mm. Issued around 685 AH, which would be 1329 AD. See Mitchiner 908. The ornament on the reverse, bottom varied between dies so dont be bound by that. The "8" looks like it is there by accident. Lots of variation on these issues from Central Asia during this period and no die study has been done.
You can find a pdf version of Mitchiner's "World of Islam" online fairly easily. Just search "Mitchiner World of Islam pdf download" and you will see.

BTW, the bottom is the obverse (with the kalima), and both pictures need to be rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise to put them right side up.

John. Thanks! I picked this out of a junk bin for $0.12!

I will have to look into these Khwarezm Shahs billon Dinars. I have very little experience with Islamic coins. This will be fun one to get my feet wet.

Mitchiners' World of Islam is a great reference - but it is still in copyright. Downloading a pfd would be a breach of that copyright. I don't think that should be advocated on the boards.

Bacchus2. Yes I figured that out while looking. I have not downloaded it. I have been looking elsewhere for a visual ID, but no luck so far.

Without the date how specific of an ID is realistic? I am guessing that I might find: denomination, ruler (total maybe), and a date range? What do you think? Because I cannot read the coin, I can only look at pics. I have no 13th / 14th century coins so it would be cool to if I could for sure place it in these century's:)

If you want to post to zeno you need to register, to do this just e-mail the administrator and let him know you want to register. He'll walk ou through the process. You can't register on the website itslef, he has to do it for you. He'll also let you know the postign guidelines there (they're pretty specific about what they want you to do with images, etc.).
