The overdate would fit right in with my "variety" 7070. When I first saw it in the OP, I too thought that it may have cleaned/polished. I feel that ANACS is the way to go if I have a questionable coin since they are the least expensive, I would have sent it to ANACS first, if it comes problem free off to PCGS to fit into my collection. Nice pick up!

Quote: I would never sell this coin, but for insurance purposes and cataloging my collection... Because guides don't list EF-45 do I just pick the $ amount between 40 & 50? Or 3/4 towards the higher grade? The lower grade? Or? For insurance purposes Id overvalue it assuming that doesn't make a significant impact on the price of insurance. They arent the easiest thing to replace and at the very least would take time and effort.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I'm definitely quite pleased with this one, it one of my top 5 favorite coins... I just love the arrows and rays design and the overdate makes it even more unique. That's a very good point you bring up, while pretty easy to cherrypick in lower grades this coin (from what I understand) is quite rare in EF and up. The highest slabbed (or raw for that matter) examples I've seen on ebay (in a year of looking) has been a PCGS AU Details (that mine actually looks much better than) for about $650, if I were to sell this, which will never happen, I'd say I should be able to get at least that, because as mentioned it doesn't come up often at all in this grade... In all honesty I've never seen one nicer than mine for sale.. I'm sure they do come up nicer once in a blue moon, but not often. I'm quite happy with this coin! And myself for taking the risk on it!

ArrowsAndRays- I have absolutely no doubt you know more about the arrows and rays series than myself, but I have a question for you, I'm curious why you say this is a late die state opposed to early? In all the research I've done it would appear the opposite, that this is quite early.. Taken from the description on Heritage's page for the 1853/4. Quote: Because of the rarity of early die state pieces, some researchers have doubted the existence of the 4 beneath the 3. First the main upright of the 1 is seen in the entire top loop of the 3 and extends downward slightly into the lower loop. From the bottom of the top ball of the 3, there remains a trace of the diagonal of the 4. On the right side of the 3, between the upper and lower loops, are traces of the vertical bar of the serif at the right side of the 4. Quote: When examples of this rare variety are located, they are usually well-worn and in later die states, often only the doubling of the shaft of the arrow is visible. All three of the markers for the 4 are viable on my coin, which would lead me to believe its a early die state. I'm just trying to learn.. And it makes it much rarer to be a early die state in this grade which would make it more valuable. Here's the link to the Heritage page with the whole write up on it, quite an interesting read... And the photos of the finest known example (MS-65) are sure to make you all drool! It sold for $54,625.00!!! http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...tIdNo=222007

Ive actually been looking for one myself, I guess at least now theres one less person for competition . Youre dead on though it would be really hard to replace. I think PCGS has just under 50 for Xf40 and above in their population report. Wherever you found that go back and see what else you can pick like that.

So I went to the ANACS population report and checked their pops and answered my question to ArrowsAndRays.. Mine was attributed 1853/4 FS-1301 which is definitely the extremely early die state, the later die state coins are attributed as 1853/4 (no 1301) but specifically say "late die state"... And then there's the inbetween which soley says 1853/4. The 4 is only visable on the extremely early dies. So mine is the extremely rare version!! There are only 11 early die states (FS-1301) attributed by them.... The best being 2 in the 40-45 bracket... And I believe I saw an ANACS EF-40 FS-1301 a while back that didn't impress me too much so I passed on it, So there's a good chance mines the nicest early attributed by them, but if my memory isn't working well right now at least its tied for best! Sweet... Basebal21- Ya, there all yours now! I've got one I'm quite happy with! So I should probably insure mine for even more, as it would be hard to find a late die state in this grade, let alone a extremely early one! If you can you should try to find one of the early states, with the 4 showing, pretty neat! Wow, only 50 on PCGS! That's great! Do they have a separate population number for early (FS-1301) and late die states like ANACS does or are they all together?

You should go back and see if there happens to be 1 more there . I might just try and hoard as many of them as I can lol. PCGS does have the separate FS version with a pop in the single digits, but I think you have to pay for the attribution to get it. Theres probably a couple more since most people wouldnt think to have that done, but it definitely looks rarer. According to Heritage NGC has about the same population. They had a PCGS MS 65 CAC go on there for over 50k. Its an early die state too and the finest known, gorgeous gorgeous coin. http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...#54605460336

Sweet, so not only did I get a great deal on a pretty rare coin but I got the rarer version of it as well . Your probably right that there are a few more FS-1301's floating around that didn't get the early designation, and only the overdate listed, (as well as some more raw ones) I'm not sure how PCGS or NGC do it, but ANACS does it all for you. Any variety listed in the RedBook they attribute for free. All I wrote on the sub form was 1853/4 and they figured the rest out on their own... Giving it either the FS # for early die states or just the overdate for later die states. Hopefully the others do too (even if not for free) that way the population will be lower. I actually got this one on ebay... If was listed as a "high grade 1853/4" but the pics were horrible, tiny and blurry, I couldn't even grade it off of them. And seeing the tells for the overdate was impossible. But it looked to be in a decent grade and had a no questions return policy so I took a chance... Everyone else didn't risk it... Thankfully! Actually I do check his listings from time to time to see if there might be anymore hidden gems.. His pics are still atrocious, but I haven't seen anymore super deals yet. Ill keep my eyes open for another in at least EF and if I can I'll snag it and list it on here, always good to have an extra set of eyes to help looking for you as well! Ya, that 65 on Heritage is amazing! There was a nicely toned 63 at one point too! Lol, I put the same link you did like four posts up or so, that's where I got the quotes on the early vs late die states.. what a coin!! That's crazy that the one coin sold for more than my entire collection would... Why don't I have the kind of money where I can spend insane money on coins?
