I just purchased a 1883 Morgan dollar labeled 1883 S$1 MS63 by NGC. Only it doesn't have a mint mark on the back. Doesn't that mean it is from the Philadelphia Mint? Do you think NGC made a mistake or someone switched coins?

The S$1 means that it's a silver dollar. It's not the mint mark.

I only have a front view for now, but the NGC hologram is on the back, and it looks just like the other NGC holograms I have seen.

It was minted in Philadelphia. If it was a SF minted dollar the label would read 1883 S S$1.

Don't feel stupid. It is very confusing. They need to change the way they do that. or at least use an abbreviation like Silv. instead of just S.

It would be easy for someone new at coins to think this in my opinion. They need to remember we are not all pros, and lots of new collectors buy graded to be sure they are getting real coins.

I never noticed that before. Just took it for granted everyone knew. Now that you mention it they should have done something like put the S as Slv or Sil or something and not next to the date. I would have thought it would at least have been farther away from the date. Interesting that not noticed by me before.

I doubt I would have made the connection either. I would think if they wanted to designate that it was silver they might write it as 1883 $1 Silver. It's not like they'er short on space to add characters to the label hehe.

Yes, it means it's a silver dollar as others have said. And if it were the gold dollar for the year it would read 1883 G$1. They still do it for the years where there aren't any gold dollars, though. It can be kind of confusing when you first see it.

An 83-S in 63 is a very expensive coin. I sure hope you didn't overpay for this one thinking you were getting the other.

The first slabbed coin I bought from ebay, I made the same mistake. I thought I was getting a great deal. I paid a reasonable price for the coin I received, but when I got the coin and there was no mint mark...

The coin was a 1925 Peace dollar, MS63. I won the bid for $18.00. Would've been an incredible deal if it had been 1925-S.

I did not realize that either. They could also try using the latin names. Silver=Ag instead of S
