I have a quantity of Silver Eagle Proofs that are all still in the boxes with the COAs. I would say that over half of my stash is 1986s with some other random years thrown in.

Basically I am wondering what to look for to see if they are worth being sent out to PCGS for grading, or if they are generally considered as PR-69 grade, etc. Doesn't it cost about $20 a pop to have grading done, regardless of what the result returns?

In just looking at them through the little plastic capsules, I do notice that some have a slight undulation to the background field (kindof like the surface of an almost still pond)

Also, if anyone knows the best place to send a quantity of coins for grading that may give a bit of a price break, that would be nice too.

Thanks for your help, all.

Is it wo
Rest in Peace

Jondozer. You have a nice quantity of Silver Eagles. You have a number of questions that fellow CCF's will answer.

I'm no expert by any means but there seem to be separate opinions in the coin community about keeping them in the OGP or sending them in to be graded and capsuled. Most of my ASE's are still in the original government packaging with COA's. Just my preference.

Unless the ASE is a 1995 w, or possibly one of the three special coin sets (2006, 2011, 2012) I see no need or additional value having the coin graded.

I agree with muddler. I find many already graded for spot or a pinch over. Let somebody else pay the fees .

I'm with the other guys on this too. I don't think it would be worth it in the long run.

IMHO, I would't bother. Keep them as they are and enjoy them that way.

I will admit that some 15+ years back I joined the "Get It Slabbed" crowd and both submitted many coins to TPG's [mostly PCI, SEGS and ANACS as this is all my budget would allow] and also purchased PCGS certified MS & Proof 69 modern coins [1970's - 1990's] in lots of 10 on ebay.

The primary reason for doing this was the quoted retail values listed in Coin World, and little did I know at the time was that all TPG companies were not the same, and since the quoted values listed in both 69 and 70 in C/World did NOT mention any TPG company, I assumed all certified coins in those grades would be valued as such.

looking back I now realize what a jerk I was by falling for this, and most, if not all the Proof coins the U.S.Mint has sold in the last 30+ years would be in the 68+ grade, and all the Silver & Gold Eagles from 1986 to the present {in both Unc. & Proof) grade either a 69 or 70.

Unless a Modern Era coin has a Variety collectors seek, I see no reason to have them certified, but do believe many of the 1790's to late 1800's Genuine coins that have known fakes from China [and elsewhere] should be Certified.

If it was me, I would find a coin show or a coin shop with a good reputation and take my coins there to be looked at. See if they can help you pick out one or too that may look PF70. Send in one or two or three through the shop if they have a PCGS or NGC affiliation.

a 1986 PF70 ASE goes for $350 to $400. a 1987 PF70 ASE goes for $1100 + . You never know, get some opinions ( can't do it with pictures ), spend a little money may get some big value.

Thanks everybody for your help. I've always loved this stuff, just never had the expertise to go far with collecting.

I have a good coin shop nearby, I'll take in some and see what they think. That, at least, couldn't hurt.

I thought that most would be the equivalent of PF69 grade, but maybe I can find that rare lady who may be worth a little more....

Thanks again, everyone!
