Found a 2009 50 cent piece in a coin machine bag last week, and wonder how the coloration was applied to it - there's a quite striking sheen that the scanner doesn't show very well, like a Titanium coating that varies according to the angle of lighting; sort of like those 2-tone paint jobs. Looks quite pretty, actually.
I can detect a corroded surface to the coin, so guess it is some sort of corrosive. Curious to know what it may be. Any chemists out there?

I'd rule that out, as the coloring is different to a standard 50c; this is a light golden-yellow which varies in intensity as you move it around in the light, and also the corroded look - most noticeable in the word Australia.

Love to know how it was done. It's certainly not spray paint.
You're right enworb, it is not UNC, but would've been a fairly good grade prior to its (mis)treatment.

I would imagine some acids would eat away at it like that and be able to leave some funky staining. That would be my first choice.

Bathe the coin in acetone or xylene for 48 hrs or if you're uncomfortable with those methods boil small amounts of distilled water and bathe 5 or ten times.

What would acetone or xylene hope to achieve?

to determine if the yellow/gold tint or toning is within the alloy or residue/oils from, perhaps an air compressor.

i found a 50c similar kinda sort of, It weighs the same as the others but I dont think its from acid or sand blasted, It has parts that are not bumpy even though they are the same size as other parts that do, the parts that do are to close to ether a raised or drop bit of the design which make me think it has not been sanded also has a sharper higher edge that also bumpy on the outside

@ Candace

Yours appears to be heavily circulated, - what we North American call a pocket piece.
