Gazot It is fun. I have probably done this for 15 years or more. In that whole time I recall only one guy a very "pompous expert" who was full of hot air anyway. Who disputed that I was correct. It was actually about a fake Mexican 8R that was shown in Riddell's book. He was so positive I was wrong that I even went back the next day with Riddell's book but he had left the show early! It happened in Raleigh and he may have asked about me. Quite a few of the regular dealers know me there on sight. Except for the really pompous idiots (there are a few) I never do this with an audience present - it can harm reputations if word gets around. But it is funny,

Well good news!! Stacks called today and it is in fact genuine and pulled an AU 58 from the NGC scrutinizer's. I'll now have to decide if I want to put in their next auction. Meeting with them next month to review the half dozen or so other coins dropped off for TPG and to decide if they will play a part in the future of my coins.

Gazot Great news - Congratulations. I can now say I have seen a real one outside of a TPG slab (sort of anyway). That difference represents a big chunk of change.

Twenty five plus years ago I traded it for a US five dollar gold piece 1902 in like xf-au condition. My father scolded me because in his opinion I fell for the fact that while at the time the peso booked for twice the retail of the gold there was no internet in 1990 and I couldnt sell it for anywhere near that.. Gold on the other hand was easy get top dollar for. At the time I think that coronet head was worth around $250? I felt like a stupid kid who was duped by a savvy businessman. My father told me "live and learn". It took twenty plus years but now it looks like the Peso will bring about a thousand dollars or more so I feel vindicated even though I was saved by technology...not my savvy coin collecting skills.

Gazot, quite an interesting and moving story about your coin. Yes, price of your coin must be >US$1000.00. You will get back the fruit of your investment. Today, I recognise a method to identify the authenticity of your coin, no TPG necessary. The method is that if you have a XF 1879 Philippine one Peso, you can compare with the PR peoso to it bit by bit, side by side, and doing the ring test, everything they present are the same because they were struck by the same die, same composition of silver/copper and even the same mint except they were from different country. Of course you must have a genuine Philippines 1897 peso first. I compare my PR peso with my XF+ Philippine Peso, they present the same characteristics except that my PR peso is thinner because it is seriously worn. I can tell the number of lilies at the edge of your PR peso is 27. Don't believe, count it.

Quote: You will get back the fruit of your investment. The best fruit would have been the opportunity to share this new info with Dad. Or even to see that savvy Pharmacist dude that tried to take advantage of a young buck. I have to look and see....my recollection is I made him throw in a couple of other coins to sweeten the deal. I used to write everything down in my little blue covered spiral bound 5" x 8" coin bible. I've seen that book I just don't know what box its in!

Beautiful fake! 2 o'clock position on the reverse side is suspicious, probably a cast seam. Not likely be made by silver, S.G. can rule it out. Poor edge. How much do you pay for it, lamdomata? Henry
