Thank you everyone for the warm welcomes to this forum. I'm from the US, central Illinois. I have been collecting for many years and enjoy finding local currency when I travel (a few years ago went to China...it was awesome!). Anyway, I recently purchased some silver coins for their precious metal content and plan to sell them soon. I always research the coins numismatic values before selling which led me to this site because I'm confused about this silver dollar. It shows a 1856 date minted it Carson City. Can't find info for this year at CC. Also the number type appears more standard than the typical roman style type for this coin and the CC seems to be "offset" from the usual strike location? Could be counterfeit but am confused as to why? and how? Any ideas?

Unfortunately, the Carson City Mint didn't begin production until 1870.

Welcome!
The Chinese are counterfeiting old coins like crazy. They don't care when date of mint mark they put on it. Chances are any of those silver dollars you bought in China have absolutely no silver in them. Check them with a magnet.

You have a fantasy counterfeit- a coin that cannot exist in reality since the Carson City Mint did not open for another 14 years. It is almost certainly not silver at all and unfortunately, it casts suspicion on the other silver coins you purchased at the same time.

Thanks Jbuck for moving my post where it should be...(still trying to sort everything this site offers and how to navigate it!) IndianGoldEagle you are correct about the widespread counterfeiting in China! Anything and everything was available, some items were cheaply copied but others were amazing in their quality. I did not purchase this coin there but took your advice with a magnet and it stuck! So now that I can confirm its fake is there a legit market for known counterfeit coins?

biokemist6 you are correct! I went back through the other coins I picked up at that time(some Morgans and some Nazi era German coins) to double check. Picked these up at a local flea market (price was right for everything...now I know why). Fortunately the Morgans appear legit, not sure about the German coins yet...their not silver and have to find a dealer to check them out.

In my opinion when one finds Silver Dollars with a CC mark on it, and this unique mark is on coins dated both before and after the Carson City Mint was in production, and on coins that do stick to a magnet on dated pieces when the Carson City mint was in operation, the CC is NOT a Nevada City Mint Mark, it is a Country Export mark and stands for China Crap

Have you touched it to a magnet?

Some people do collect counterfeit coins... I don't know anyone like that at all... (Read: I DO!)

But, I'd love to see pictures of it, and see if it's a CC mate to CF-S$1-1856-0001 over on The Black Cabinet:

The funniest, completely off-date CC I have in the collection is a 1963-CC Seated Liberty dollar, here:

Bwright. I'm originally from Galesburg and lived in Peoria for several years. Sorry to hear about about coins.

Any chance CAT sent you to China? Maybe you could write them off as a business expense?!

Be wary of all high value coins and too good to be true deals until you know more about them.

I collect counterfeits as well, but I would imagine that you paid a high price for it. How much did you pay?
