Well, I've been trying some things and I've got somewhere now.

I know what I'm up to!

Lessons learnt:
The mould MUST be flexible
You must let the first layer go pretty solid before adding the object.
Add the object AFTER the next resin is poured in to avoid bubbles
Large surface area/mass makes the thing float to the top
Cast 3 layers
When casting, cast a first layer thickly, place th object in, second layer which is thin and then the final thicker layer on top of this. This allows the object to move about but ensures it is fully encapsulated by the end
Cut with a good saw. This stuff cracks if you mess it about

Still havent worked out how to polish but my last attempt needs to be cut up a bit. I recommend against that...ill be getting a smaller mould for anything proper (Well, this was meant to be proper - some albino redwood from forum member Left - not ruined, per se, but couldve gone much better.).

Okay, what should I try to put in there? I've got some redwood left to put in incase this went belly up so ill be doing that but I'm nearly out of resin!

Wont be much to see from this one - the original plan was to have a little branch of redwood in the main bit and a branch section and a single needle below but the main bit floated to the top. If I had though about it before I cut it up I couldve just transferred moulds and poured another layer, but it wouldnt have come out that well. And I have another bit I can try the same with. Ill need a new mould though (ruined the last one...).

Ive looked at the chunks and the single needle looks really nice if I can polish it up. Its centering which is the main issue. Ill use the spare offcentre bit to put a label on.

No problem.

You can hold off on the photos until you get the finished product.

I forgot to mention earlier, for those who want some background on Ben's goal...

Thanks, jbuck. I know I miss some stuff, but encapsulating redwoods?

Takes an awful big mold.

Actually it was casting redwood not redwoods.
