Most of the proofs I get from the mint look worse than that.

The last picture shows die flow lines, not damage. Flow lines are almost never seen on modern US Mint proofs but can frequently be seen on pre-WWII proofs.

Eh, they're still pretty common on modern proofs. 2005-S Proof Jefferson nickel (Ocean View) by CaptainFwiffo, on Flickr That one also has some toning going on, but there are also a lot of flow lines. I frequently get proof sets from the mint that have spots or toning, and flow lines are common as well.

I appreciate the responses. I never said the coin was damaged. I said it lacked quality. I have numerous mint produced proof coins and none look like this but some have turned milky. This coin is not milky. Am I overreacting? Would you say this is normal? How would you feel if you ordered a coin and it looked this way? It's not like I can return it nor would I try to return it.

I agree that it does not look like a proof from the West Point Mint.
But is it supposed to be minted to a period look ? I used to build furniture and cabinets. We built period pieces, where we use to flog the pieces with a chain before finishing, to give them an authentic period look. Perhaps that is the end goal here.

Had a similar problem with some Brass tokens. Ended up bead blasting the dies and making them satin finish instead of Proof like. I think maybe strike pressure was off No problem with brass as the blanks are cheap but with gold you pretty much get one chance and that's it. It looks like there was some dust on the dies. Any contamination and its going to show gold is not a forgiving medium. Mr Carr has always been up front with me if there is an issue so I think the best thing to do is just ask him.
