I bought this coin because the surface didn't appear to have any systematic scratch marks like it had been tooled and looked to be VF. What would you grade it?

I think the VF grade is a bit optimistic, unfortunately. Otherewise free of problems.

Looks F12 with a shot at F15. The reverse exhibits more wear.

Lack of hairlines and no signs of an abrasive cleaning are good things for sure. It appears to be lightly cleaned, what TPG often put in problem-free holders as market acceptable.

I am less concerned with tooling on lower denomination, lower value coins. It looks like a nice Seated quarter.

Old school: F12
These days: VF20, assuming the color is original. If it's dipped out, as the pic implies it might be, then F or VF details, cleaned.

its not VF just due to the pole degradation through the arm on the obverse

old school/new school viewpoint confuses me

yes, grading = subjective
no, diagnostic points never change; a spades a spade

your coin looks problem free albeit for BH1964s observation which I agree with
nice quarter, enjoy it

This coin was part of a lot that included another 1854 as well. I already have this coin actually and have to decide which one I want to keep. There is another coin that I do not have in the lot I will keep. This one I already have, it isn't as nice but has character and plus it was bought with Christmas money so it is essentially a gift.
I think I want to get at least one of each type of Seated quarter.

Its probably around F12. Although all letters in Liberty are reasonably strong, there appears to be significant wear on the arms, chest, face, hair, and knees.

I am thinking F-12. It appears to have been cleaned long ago because the surfaces are a little bright and there is a little bit of of dirt/original patina clinging on to Miss Liberty and the stars. Still a nice coin!

How much would you value the coin since it is market acceptable?
