I received a 1980 5 Ptas coin in change today. I know absolutely nothing about Foreign Coins. I don't even know how much it would exchange for. I hope a quarter since that is what it should have been in my change. It is cool though and I will probably keep it. It has a soccer ball on the back. I assume this is a Spanish coin as it says Espana. It has an 82 on the reverse and a star with an 80 in it. Why so many numbers? I didn't take alot of time taking pics. If better ones are needed let me know. Thanks in advance!

The star with the 80 is the date 1980. It is a 5 Peseta KM#817 a copper-nickel coin made for three years 80,81 and 82. Spain is on the Euro now so there is NO face value. As a coin they made 75 million dated 1980 and many more in the other two years. It is worth about 25 cents if MS but circulated copies are in junk boxes everywhere at 1-10 cents. Most coin dealers will give at most 1 cent for one.

They are often substituted into rolls intentionally as a small fraud. You can by these buy the pound now.

It was made for the World Cup in 1982 which I think Italy won. Spain had only been a democracy for a few years since the death of Franco in (off the top of my head) 1975. When I lived in Spain 10 years ago 5 Pesetas was almost worthless, it was the lowest value coin, 100PTS was worth 40 british pence or about 30US cents. However at this time it was worth more than that.

Thanks to both of you. Great info. I think I will hold on to it. It is pretty cool. Plus, I don't want to commit fraud or anything. Ha.
