Many collectors are scraping by financially, so it would seem that coin publications and web sites would recognize what's happening and run more material on affordable coins. I understand the need to cover the major auctions, but it seems a little more awareness of the financial reality of subscribers needs to be happening.

Good point but remember that the people that write for them, their publisher, editors all have jobs that pay and possibly a lot. Many people working and making good money have sort of lost touch with reality.
Now here is a thought. Sit down and start writting articles you think people would like to read in those magazine. Start sending them in to them. Possbly your not good at story telling but even if not, you could start them thinking of what people like you are interested in. Possibly you could end up a reporter for them.

You've got it totally backwards. I have been a freelance writer for 25-plus years. You never write a story and try to sell it. Spending time and effort to write something that may not have a market tells editors that you're a total amateur. Sell the idea, then write the story.

People are dreamers, no one wants to read about what they can walk down to the corner LCS and buy. They want to dream, they want to read all about the $10 mil auction and the V-nickel.
Road & Track doesn't write about Ford Fiestas, they write about what people dream of owning, Mercedes, Vettes, Porsches and such. People Magazine makes millions writing
about Lindsey Lohan, not my neighbor Barb.

Even when they do write about " affordable " coins it's usually, " coins you can have for under $500 dollars. " People don't want to read about how they can buy an ASE now for $32 and have it be worth $40 dollars next year. They want that coin they can buy for $200 and have it be worth $1000 next year.

Road & Track has been reknowned for many decades for being what it is---no two ways about that, but... A lot of people still read Motor Trend,
which actually devotes a fair amount of space to cars that can be bought and driven by ordinary mortals.

Nonetheless, I agree with the characterization that (most) people are dreamers. Fantasy sells better than reality, which is why the Dallas Cowboys
Cheerleaders aren't a bunch of grandmothers and our next-door neighbors.

Still... I have to admit that I would be interested in a magazine about coins that I'm capable of buying. It seems the coin mags are almost all
Road & Track type stuff. I'd like to see a Motor Trend-type coin mag.

Most coin magazines I've read (which admittedly wasn't much) had mainly articles about coins that are ridiculously obscure - but reasonably affordable (very possibly within $100).

Imagine magazine articles discussing recently discovered VAMs, or listing varieties of a specific mint of Fallen Horseman. That sort of thing (except usually more obscure).
