Hello:

I will be in the NYC Wednesday and may a have an hour or two to kill and was thinking of bringing a few of my nicer pieces for a look see at a reputable firm. Is Stacks still the place to go like it was 30 years ago? LOL.

I will be taking the train in and out so something around Grand Central or otherwise I will be on the upper east side. Of course that's why there's 10,000 taxis so I can always run to where needed just trying to save time enough to spend at the dealers.

If anyone has a suggestion they are comfortable with I would love to try and stop in.

Thanks!

Gaz

I asked the same thing in another thread a few months ago. If memory serves me, I think I got 2 or 3 replies and the only suggestion was Stacks.

Anyhow, here are the NYC listed US Mint dealers:

New York Foreign Exchange, Inc.
750 3rd Avenue, 9th Floor
New York, NY 10017 tel 800-346-3924

Brigandi Coin Company
60 West 44th Street
New York, NY 10036 tel 212-869-5350

Gold Standard Jewelry Corp
21 West 47th Street
New York, NY 10036 tel 212-719-5656

Jefferies Bache Financial Services
1 New York Plaza 13th Fl
New York, NY 10292 tel 212-778-8654

Manfra, Tordella, & Brookes, Inc.
90 Broad St
New York, NY 10004 tel 212-981-4510

Also, go to the ANA website -- http://www.money.org -- and then
Go to Membership >>> Dealers >>> NY State >>> NY CIty and you'll get the NYC ANA member coin dealers. Pick out the ones that show as having retail facilities.

You now know everything I know. I dug these leads out AFTER my NYC trip, so I never went to any of these places and I therefore don't know what any of them are like.

Have a good trip and good luck with your NYC LCS tour.

The most interesting coin store in Manhattan that I found is Paul Bosco's shop: 149 Madison Avenue on 32nd St, just east of Madison New York, NY 10016. All the other shops mentioned are good standard shops but a little boring . But Paul's shop is a wonderfully disorganized shop, But Paul seems to be able to find his way around every thing. He has a storage area above the shop so if there is anything specific your looking for ask him. Here is a link to his website:

Just be careful. NYC is my old stomping ground and though the people are basically good, they sometimes show an edge we're not used to.

Hey blackjack, New Yorkers aren't bad at all, maybe just a little misunderstood.

I'm originally from the Bronx, grew up in Brooklyn and currently work in downtown Manhattan. I think New Yorkers are among the nicest, most tolerant people you'll ever meet.

I have met some bad New Yorkers in my time, but the good ones I know still outnumber the bad by at least the same ratio as good and bad people from any other place in the country.

Just avoid any Mets/Yankees or Giants/Jets conversations and you will be okay.

I visited Stacks about five years ago and had a similar experience. After being buzzed through the door and visually "scanned" by the armed, plain-clothed security guard, I approached the display cases which surprisingly were very sparsely populated with coins. I was there to buy an ancient (Greek) and placed a $100 limit on my purchase. Since I didn't see any ancients on display, I asked if I could look at a few in the $100 range. The Stacks gentleman very paternally closed his eyes briefly, nodded, and brought me a box with about a dozen nicely arranged Greek ancients. I guess I was looking through the $100 bargain bin. I found my coin for $100 and was happy with my purchase. The Stacks employee wasn't much on conversation, as I recall, but it was a pleasant visit.

Not that this helps you but when I was 13 (spring of 1974) my father and I went to NYC. We stumbled on a very small coin shop and I found a 1909VDB in his 10 cent box. You would have thought I hit the lottery. I still have this coin in my Whitman penny book. I'd bet the shop is long gone but if memory serves me correctly, it was near the Empire State Building. Anybody know what store I'm talking about? Have fun in NYC.

"...hate it though when your in a high end dealers and they seem so disinterested in coins we drool over..."

@Gazot---That's how it gets. When you spend every minute of your work week with those things staring you in the face, you get accustomed and hardened to
them and almost nothing impresses you any more.

I have a friend who works at a major LCS. He'll look at a tube of 1oz Gold Eagles with the same disinterest that I'll look at tube of circulated clad pennies with.

Oh, well -- at least you got to see some of those things. I have yet to even see them. I'll be in NYC in a few months, so I may spend a little time drooling on the
counters at Stacks.
