Before the Government introduced the new plated coins, the vending industry requested actual circulation strike coins instead of the usual test tokens. The coins were issued to the industry on a deposit basis, but not all were returned to the mint, but found their way into the coin market. Seeing how popular the legal tender test coins were, the
RCM issued a plated test coin set (mintage 20,000 sets) Since the coins in this set are actual circulation coins and not test tokens, no test token numbers were assigned. I would say these coins are more of a copy set of the test coins put out by the mint to capitalize on their popularity in the numismatic circles. The original issue price for the five coin set and medallion was about $100.00, but Charltons lists it now for about half that. The dollar coin and twoonie are not included as they are not plated coins.
