This neat sounding science experiment will work with any predominantly copper coin. I haven't tried it at home, so um.. don't blame me if something happens!

What am I missing here? I've soaked old pennies in acetone for days (just like many others on this forum) and they never got warm. No glow. Like I said, what am I missing here?

I just re-read the article and they want you to heat the penny first. Is this dumb? Why would a put a hot penny into flammable acetone?

Although, technically, acetone has a very high auto-ignition temperature (869F), there isn't enough money on Earth to get me to try this. Copper's melting point is twice that temperature, and it's conceivable that you could heat a Cent to above acetone's ignition point without knowing you're doing it.

Please don't try this.

SsuperDdave,

Too late. I filled my bathtub with acetone (you'd be surprised how heavy a 55 gallon drum of the stuff is) and then I dropped in a super-heated copper penny. You could see the glow from space.

Any chance I could stay with you while my house is being rebuilt? And I wear about a 42 regular if you have any extra clothing.

It is really scarry what is on the internet. Imagine a young kid reading things like this, trying it, burning out his eyes, maybe starting the house on fire, getting killed, etc. And do you think the people that put this on the internet care?
