I found an Alabama State Quarter from 2003 which appears to be all silver. When looking at the ridged side I see only silver, no reddish color per usual.

Has anyone heard of this or can anyone offer more information regarding this?

Thanks!! -- Beth

Okay Bethany, well they didn't make silver ones that have the P mint mark. But a photo would still be nice.

Please answer these question if you want:
1. Are you new to coins?
2. Do you collect coins?
3. You understand quarters and dimes from 1964 and before are silver?

* The mint made silver State Quarters though. But I belive they must have a S mint mark.

I will post pictures ASAP, cannot from work at this moment.
I am aware of quarters, dimes, half dollars and other coins being some silver composition before 1964, yes.
I just thought this quarter was odd because usually I see a red and silver color on the edge of the coin. This one looks all silver.
Once I get home tonight I will post photos, thanks!

Sounds good. Life comes first you know. So take care and do what you must. The coin can always wait. We don't want you to get fired, lol.

I'm not a expert on coins but I can be helpful with them. I starting to want to see that quarter pretty bad now . It sounds pretty cool the way you're saying it looks like. It might not be anything special but it's always worth looking into it. I have like 2000 coins but mostly are wheat cents and buffalo's.

Firstly, Welcome to the community.

I have seen several clad coins where during the striking process the top layer of cladding flows over the side of the copper core. This is probably one of those. The copper is in there , just covered.

These pop up on the forum from time to time. Most likely it has been plated with a thin layer of silver or platinum. They were sold on HSN and the sorts.

Almost certainly plated, but the first thing you need to do is get the weight of the coin in grams to at least one decimal place, preferably two decimal places.

I agree with jokingjoker and Conder101 I have seen lots of these. Most always when you cant see the copper edge they are just plated.

Beth!

I worked as a cashier for two years and I have three of these coins. Unfortunately, they're little more than oddities--the high likelihood is that you have a plated quarter that has made its way into circulation. Many people stocked up on these, only to discover that everyone else had the same idea, and now there's a glut of them.

They sure are pretty, though, aren't they?
