What is a good place to start to learn about varieties of classic coins?

Books? Websites?

I'd like to learn more about varieties and how to spot them.

Are there many varieties for mercs or walking liberty halfs?

There are many books, many websites. I'm in the midst of learning about varieties-- sorting through bunches of coins which have sat in piles in our family for decades-- so I can tell you what I've been using for the Mercs and Walkers:

http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...rcury-dimes/ Great info, has a very useful section in chapter 6 "Date by Date" where you can look up important varieties by year/mm. It doesn't list or show pictures of every possible variety though. No one resource seems to.

http://varietyvista.com/CONECA%20Ma...Listings.htm An exhaustive list of doubled dies, RPMs, etc but mostly without pictures so it can be difficult to use, especially for a newbie.

http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...alf-dollars/ Same type of info as for the Mercury dimes

http://www.amazon.com/Cherrypickers...bxgy_b_img_y often called just 'Cherrypickers' or 'CP' on this forum; 2 volumes, this link is for volume 2 which covers dimes through dollars. Also available in digital form.

Many many more online resources and printed resources, often specific to a single type or design of coin.

Have fun, it's addicting!

You found the CCF so I would say you are ahead of the curve. Use the seach box here and you will have plenty to read.

Try coppercoins.com you will like it...

For classic coins I would recommend Noyes Book on Large Cents Snows Book on Flying Eagle and Indian cents And, the Breen Book which covers many different Varieties. Websites; coppercoins.com varietyvista Coneca I believe Wexler has a website also. If your stumped on a coin you can also try a quick google search, or even posting it here on Coincommunity
