When a few machine are making cents at a time you can see the number of die pairs use on the run of cent you find in a bin/bag/roll. The most I've found of the same die pair in a roll was 19 of the same variety. The least? One. You just get a sampling of what was in the batch that was run.
Best place to look for markers are on die scratches that are surrounded by devices. The flattening occurs more on scratches during striking in the open field areas. Some flatten and others get removed by a new polishing. But next to devices are the best places to find lasting markers.
