We all know about the last 1 million pennies, but how many did they mint total?
In the past few years the mintages numbers were:
2009 - 455,680,000 2010 - 486,200,000 2011 - 662,750,000
I heard a rumor that 2012 was the least amount produced in many years, does that mean less than 100,000,000?

It could the least produced in many years while still being way over 100 mil.
The last time less than 100 million were made was 1960 (75.7 million)
The lowest in the last 25 years was 1990 at 218 million

It did stop at May, but mint may produced them faster than normal after they knew the decision. In 2012 they made steel penny firstly then changed to zinc for the last months, probably want to used all the materials up.

According to the coin show guy, they started using leftover blanks from 2011 that were magnetic. Then they switched to the zinc blanks. He did not give a finial Mintage , he talked lots about the pennies significance and projected future value. Rox

even if the mintage is below 70 million that is still a wack of hoarded coins. How can they be worth anything in the future? The only important 2012 penny is in the currency museum.

Just an estimate. But who knows where it came from?
@john100: So true, especially considering all the box talk. Any scarcity that is peddled is probably due to much of the mintage being hoarded. That points to a massive oversupply.

I think people should first ask themselves "Does the Mint require a full year to mint all the coins for each denomination?" Magnetic and non-magnetic are both quite common, not in circulation, because they are all being hoarded as rolls. The Mint had pallets of penny boxes collecting dust when I went there in the Fall. Apparently all someone had to do was call the Mint to get boxes ordered for about $60 a box shipped to your door. Pretty much every box selling on ebay or the coin show were picked up for $60 or less depending on quantity ordered. Or you could get a few rolls at the boutique for 52 cents per roll. Pretty good markup on ebay for the most collected cent in Canadian history.

Thanks for all the replies. If they made 250 million what proportion are magnetic. I heard someone post 1/3000 were magnetic. I don't think that possible, that would be only 83,000 coins. If the last 1 million were all magnetic the ratio is already 1/250.

Looks the last 1 million are non-magnetic, although the specification says both. At least all people I know have only non-magnetic special wrapped rolls.
