My local dealer has on seal a 1936 proof set. I'm tempted to buy it for 7250.00. Do you think I should do it or not. Please help me decide. Do you think investing that kind of money in this proof set is good? Thanks for any help

I remember when they were selling for $1,200.00 and I thought that was high.

Is it sealed or can you inspect the coins?

you can inspect the coins it looks like it's just 62-65 coins assembled from single proofs and not the original proofs from the original mint complete set in individual plastic things like original.

I think I'd have to have an original, untouched set for that money.

The cent will be valued very differently if it qualifies at Red verses Brown or Red-Brown. If it is a legitimate PR-65 Red coin (either Satin or Brilliant finish) with full original luster and color it would retail for $2000 or more. If it is a Brown however value drops by two-thirds.

If you are shopping in this price range you might do better buying well-matched, certified PCGS coins one at a time to complete the set. That would maximize your ability to sell at a strong price if and when you want to pass them on.

The price is very excessive even for an original, from the Mint set. The one you describe could be almost anything. I'd keep far, far away from that set. From what you say this set is just a pile of loose coins made to look like a set. For that price you would never be able to sell it for close to that.
