The question remains, will there be any premium of single mint set coins compared to the regular business strikes?

I have noticed that the satin finish coins seem slightly darker and lack the luster that a coin fresh from a roll has. The satin coin fields are impressive, but I feel the business strike coins are more flashy. Just my opinion.

After receiving the sets...I don't think so! While the coins are very nice in this years mint sets I don't think the difference will be noticeable to the average collector if you compared them out of the package. Just my humble opinion and guess I probably should spend a little more time examining and comparing the coins but my first impression was NOT much difference.

The whole thing sounds confusing to me. I've heard satin finish which is like a matte finish. Well if they are like each other why are there different names? It sound to me like they are something like a matte finish and if they are produced the same way that mint sets typically are produced, I don't think I'll be too impressed with them. That's why I'm not ordering until I hear what some people who buy them think. But if they are produce just like mint set coins then it seems to me the nicks and dings are going to stand out even more against a duller background. I'm waiting to see what people think about them. It sounds like they might end up being the worse of both worlds--not a business strike and not really a special finish either, at least not like the JFK Mattes were.

But at least they are trying new ideas at the mint, that's encouraging.

I sure see a difference. The satin ones have a nice satin finish while if you can find a roll of circulation strikes with "prooflike surfaces" then boy there's a Big difference.

I just received my sets and I have to say there is a major difference between a regular struck coin and the new satin finish coin.

The first thing that impressed me was that there were no bag marks on any of the coins received. I like the satin look much better than the glossy look of the regular strike.

The satin finish should not be confused with the matte finish proof. The matte finish has a slight rougher finish and is double struck. Very easy to spot the difference there.

In general it seems that the mint has taken a whole lot more care in producing these new sets. It's kind of nice to be getting something better than regular uncirculated coins for the money were're paying. For you WINS members I will be putting some singles up for auction with a $0.00 reserve.

Just my opinion folks.

I would have to say that Steve is right on target with this one. I am also very impressed with the quality of the silver set of coins. AS for which one of these coins (regular issue of satin finish) will be the most popular, I can only add the following data;
The mint has churned out about 157.6 million coins per month of he Buffalo nickel. That means that when it is all over and done with on June 19 (last day for minting Buffalos) they will have produced about 945 million of these coins. As of the end of May they had sold 84 million coins to collectors through their web site where more than face value was charged.
I can not even imagine near that nember of satin proof coins being minted, so they should be in the minority so far as population goes.
So stock up on Satin finishes if you are bound and determined to save Buffalo coins. Thay are the only one's that will stand a chance of increasing in value over the years. IMO

I still think that to find High grade Business strike coins ,, will be where the bigger premium will be, if the majority of the satin finish mint set coins are higher grade due to special handling !! that will still make them the majority when it comes to the number of gems being found from the regular business struck coins.

Just My opinion ,,

Terry,

I didn't hear that they were changing the proof coin. They have already been issued. Did you hear something that I missed..?

Nothing has changed! I just think the proof will be a great coin to have as that is a good as it gets! I really didn't think about the satin buffalo being anything special but I am now giving that second thoughts. Will be comparing the business strike with the mint set satin and then making up my mind how to proceed. Looks like I may be building another herd?

Well I took the time to get the 2005 mint sets back out last night so I could compare them with unc. versions of the coins! WHOA BABY its like daylight and dark! Guess I owe some of you a definite apology as the Mint has created a whole new series of coins here! Do I like it, not quite sure at this time but have done made up my mind to go on another buffalo hunt and, in the back of my mind, I am thinking the Sackies might be worth picking up as well. I just can't believe I now have a whole new set of coins to chase after as some of them I want in quanity!!!
