Hello!

I was wondering if anyone here can direct me as to how I go about collecting Canadian coins.

I've always been interested in coins but only collected British Sovereigns,Spanish escudos and Austrian ducats.

However, now I'm more interested in Canadian coins especially large cents, for some strange reason! and just bought my first 1884 and I honestly love it!

so question here is, how do I go about collecting, what grades and years, do I go year by year or is there a sort of type sets I can complete?

any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks!

They have some great type-set folders/holders around. That way, you can get your feet on the ground until you find any area that you want to specialize in. I would suggest that you pick up a book or two to get a good knowledge base first .. a Charlton or Haxby or Whitman. I would suggest a membership in the CNA so that you will get a CN Journal every month. Then subscribe to the Canadian Coin News to see what all is going on .. great articles and Trends as well. If you live near a metropolitan area, start to attend some coin shows or auctions and join a local coin club. Large Cents are cool .. that's my forte.

Welcome to the community. If you are interested in Canadian coins, I would suggest picking up a coin album from your local coin shop and go to the bank and get a box of whatever denomination you would like to start collecting. Search the box for the dates you need and when you are done, bring the box back to the bank and get your money back. A cheap way for you to begin collecting while you learn more. Check out the coin roll searching thread. Many people do this. Do a search on how to roll search and many threads will pop up on how to go about doing it. Great fun. Cheers. And welcome again.

It depends on what you are interested at. For myself I've started by collecting business circulation coins. I try to get what I can afford. I have a crush about the quarters that I've almost completed, missing only some expensive Victoria key-dates. For now I'm upgrading slowly to MS coins and I'm up to Georges VI.
I'm also interested about coins circulation since the first settlements. So I've got a few french coins and british aswell. And I've got to a few tokens. Paper money is to expensive for me.

After you've decided which Canadian series you wish to start with, buy the highest grade that you can reasonably afford (problem free) with KEY Dates and EYE APPEAL
being priority #1!
