I bought this coin forever ago and lost it in my safe for a while. Its a silver coin, but I'm not sure of its purity.

When I found it again I realized it had all that green gunk on it. Is that Verdigris? Would Verdicare do any good?

I had to adjust my camera's exposure to capture the green. With normal exposure it just looked like the normal redish toned color that the rest of the low parts have.

Thought I should add... Acetone makes no difference.
Rest in Peace

I don't know about acetone on copper. Have you tried the copper cleaner..I think it's called Verdicare or something.

I hope some expert knows...

That indeed looks like verdigris, but as the coin is very worn, and the verdigris has not really pitted the surface, there is no further loss in value.
Because it is so worn, it is a matter of debate in terms of cost if the use if VerdiCare is justified.

It looks worse in the picture. I dont think it would hurt to have some Verdicare around.. what is the shelf life for that stuff?

The Portuguese 5 escudos of 1933 was only 65% silver. I suppose if the rest is copper, might that be enough for verdigris?
