I happened to see on the Internet that BofA exchanges Australian and Canadian dollars, Euros and British pounds at the bank for US money. Has anybody ever tried to buy any foreign coins from your bank before? I think next time I go to the bank I will see if they can sell me any Canadian pennies that they may have.

I believe it's dependent upon the area you live in. I live pretty close to the Canadian border (200 mi.) and all banks in the area are required to have Canadian Currency to exchange for Canadian travelers. Also I exchanged cash for Euro's last year prior to leaving the U.S on vacation.

Currently I buy all the Canadian pennies I can find at local banks. But the Canadian currency tellers will only exchange what is in their tray. I have not been able to/cannot buy the boxes and was told last month that when they run out they will "round up" for exchange purposes.

I have been at a few banks dumping when other customers have come in to pick up Euros or whatver for their upcoming vacation.

The bank only hands out cash.

I have also been in the bank dumping when other customers ahead of me are dumping change and the bank gives them back a handful of foreign coins and the customer says they just got back from vacation so that is where the coins came from and the banks tells them to keep them and have a nice day.

So I guess the point is you can get foriegn currency but not coin from a bank.

Sometimes the banks will have a change counting machine and folks leave the foreign coins in the reject bin. What the banks do with these I don't know - I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I have never been able to get coins, either inside or outside of Australia, at money changers.
The only exception to that is if you sell foreign notes, and then you can receive notes and coins of the home country which you happen to be in at the time.

I have been able to buy foreign notes at money changers, with home country notes and coins.

The coins received at money changers in the country of purchase of foreign notes, just go back into circulation in the country where the foreign notes were bought.

If you come home with a variety of foreign coins, they just become tourist souvenirs, so it is best to spend as many of them you can in their country before leaving that country.

I know several of the banks here in Australia collect any of the foreign coins that they collect through coin machines etc and then donate them to a couple of international charities who are able to spend the coins elsewhere.

Up here in Canada, a few of the branches I go to just give me their foreign coins. Most banks say they don't accept foreign coins though.

It varies bank to bank here. I know which banks to NOT try and pass off Canadian coin to without losing my head to them :)
When they pull the cups on the counters, they must throw out the foreign. I've asked them to save for me but haven't heard anything (yup they are tossing them).

I was at a dump bank on Monday and a woman was picking up some Euros for her daughter (at least that is what she told the teller ) and she walked out with an envelope of paper money.

Just acquired 4 1967 Canadian quarters from a teller this morning. Love the cats! I'm on a roll since looking for Canadian cents and glancing at the tellers trays.

My favorite teller saves all the non US coins she gets from the machine for me.
Before I started going there they used to THROW THEM IN THE TRASH. Why? I have no idea.
