Something about this Half Dime just doesn't look quite right to me, but I don't have a lot of experience with them. First look it looks great but the longer I look at it something is nagging at me about it. Just wondering if my feelings are correct or if I'm just wrong and it's a good coin.

Weird. The strike is very good and I see heavy clash marks. The date and mint mark look like my example. I don't see anything other than the odd pitting on the obverse that indicates it's not authentic but will leave it to those with more experience than myself.

Good looking coin from the. The only thing a little strange looking compared to some of the Half Dimes I have is it looks like it has a really heavy/deep rim at the 3 'o'clock mark but that may just be the lighting.

Is that an 1853 or an 1858?
If it's an 1853 shouldn't it have arrows by the date?

I think it supposed to be a 1858. The 3 should have more of an opening than that. If it is supposed to be a 1853 then the date is concerning it is concerning compared to others. You are right though the 1853 is supposed to have the arrows.

After looking at it closer I think the coin was heavily pitted and someone tooled and smoothed the fields. Look at Libertys shoulder and upper gown and head and you will see deep pitts but only on liberty. What are the odds that she only took the hits and not the fields of the coin as well.

it is supposed to be an 1853O there was a no arrow variety that was a mintage of 160,000. I am thinking it might be an 8 reworked into a 3. Just asked for a better picture of the date from the seller, will see if I get one.

I'm basing my interest in the 3 based off of the look of the 3 in this pic among others. Definitely looks like it may be reworked. 400431357439

If you are considering purchasing this coin I would recommend you pass. The 1853 no arrows Half Dime is a scarce date but with the pitting and possible reworking of the date this coin should be sent to a grading service for authentication. Ed ANA LM-3175

1853 comes with and without arrows, the 53-O no arrows is a very tough coin. This isn't a 53-O no arrows. The date also looks odd for a 58.
