I am planning about a month long trip to Europe. I'll be mostly in France not far from the coast, perhaps I will also be spending some time in Great Britain and Germany.

Would it be worth packing up a metal detector to go with me? I've heard they are very fragile when it comes to being dropped/shocked/etc.

How would I go about packaging up my metal detector to avoid such damage?

Is it even worth it to bring it along if I only plan on using it a few times?

Or are there places to rent them at reasonable rates?

Thanks.

Mine came needing assembly - the computer on the top, the rod and the detecting coil all separated easily and could be re-assembled without tools. So if yours is like that, I'd separate it and pack the parts in the middle of all your clothes for padding.

You could also try putting it back in the box and shipping it to Europe if it doesn't fit in your suitcases without triggering expensive airline weight fees.

*Note: This is from past travel experiences, not past detecting experiences.

If its a newish machine then dont worry too much they are quit robust. Just do as nalaberong advised, Take the stem apart, bubble wrap the search head and box, pack it tight and away you go! Defo worth taking it..... if I go out for more than an hour, my baby comes with me
You will never soar like an eagle if you hang around with turkeys.....

But be sure not to pack it in your carry-on, or else your metal detector might set off their metal detectors ;)

I don't know how much they cost these days but a lockable shotgun case would be the go,
it will also be a talking point with customs,
these cases have a foam insert like a cushon and tend to sandwich anything you put in them,
anyway I just wanted to run this thought by you

If you do take it with you, it would be wise to register it as having been bought in Canada so that you are not charged custom duty
upon your return. Also, that document may make passing through security a lot easier if you trigger an alarm.
Good hunting.

Not a metdet, just a friend of metdets everywhere.
