I think the Mint is cancelling the uncirculated 5oz ATB coins, but will probably maintain the bullion version of this coin.

I say this for a couple of reasons.

First, watching them on the Mints website. My first Mint purchase was in August 2012. They had all five 2011's 5oz coins and three 2012. I waited for the September 24th launch of the ATB Hawaii Volcano coin and bought two.

I did the same with the Denali coin too.

Just before the Holiday's, there was a small window of time where you could have bought all of 2011 and 2012 ATB's on a single order.

Then December 31, 2012 happened. The Mint stopped selling the 2011 ATBs, and yes they did give plenty of warning then the date of execution was.

Second, the Mint put all the 2013 ATB's on hold, to be determined. Back in January the mint did have release dates for the 2013-P ATB's with the price raised to $244.95.

And lastly, the quick sell off of the 2012 ATB's. Currently the Chaco ATB is the only one for sale by the Mint and if the trend continues, that will be sold-out soon.

To conclude, I think the Mint is bowing out of the uncirculated 5oz ATB coin market. Maybe its the market price for silver type of thing, kind of like when the Mint suspended the sale of bullion products for a few weeks last year.

Personally I like the 5oz uncirculated P-coins. They are beautiful and show off much more detail than the quarter.

I hope the Mint will continue to produce these coins, but I'm not holding my breath.

If we look at the how the sales trended down, (notwithstanding sales after the recent announcements) it's easy to see the mint ending the uncirculated 5oz program.

I am selling off my 2010 "P" 5oz silvers to raise money for 19th century silver. I do like the design and finish but tying up two grand in them isn't what I want to do right now.

Hmmmm...The Mint will charge $245 for less than $150 of silver....and you think they will decide to throw that profit away?

I think not...drop the mintage to 12-15k, create a perceived low mintage product, and every one will be a sell out

With today's spot silver prices 15k coins sold creates over 1.4 MILLION dollars in profit (over spot) per coin, 12k sold is 1.1 million. Subtract set production costs and they still have a tidy balance

They also paid a fortune for the coin press that manufactures the pucks...

All I can find is "undisclosed sum" as far as what the coining press cost. I thought at one point I had read an enormous figure, Any body know?

Welder, you have erred on the side of a fallacious argument, which basically runs once there were 10 different coins available, now it's down to one, ergo, the Mint no longer wants to mint and distribute this kind of coin. The points made by Foxwoods and Billie made are correct, there is quite a bit of profit even at 10,000 coins sold at $244.95 per, and the German-made Gräebener medal press was quite expensive to order and install at the Philly Mint. No way is the Mint not going to strike as many of the 3" coins as they can sell. Otherwise, it would only be used to strike the occasional gold medal or the bronze duplicates, which have sluggish sales at best. There was a similar gap in the between the last of 2011s and first of the 2012s 5 oz. last year.

But how much of that $90 per coin is profit? These coins are not cheap to produce, and the fewer of them that are made just forces up the unit cost of each one that is made. There used to be a law that the mint could not make more than 20% profit over cost. If mintages go down their fixed costs won't decline that much and the profits will start declining unless they raise prices

the mint is doing a terrible job with the whole ATB program I was shocked at the after market prices on the 2012's once the mint decided they were not going to produce the originally intended 25,000 just doesn't make any sense at all

The 2012 America the Beautiful 5oz Silver Uncirculated Coin Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico (NQ1) is available for purchase right now for $229.95 from the mint.

I'd guess there's a 10% net profit at that price. $25 tops.

The whole program or just the five ounce portion?

I have to disagree if you meant the whole program, I think the normal size quarters are doing just fine.

Id agree the 5oz program.

Actually I would agree with the whole program for one reason starting the S business strikes after they had already released some. Had they not done that Id have no complaints about the quarters specially
