I think I'll go with mortar set, too. The 1947's were famous for it, although you see it show up on other dates from the '40's. It happens when the chrome plating of the die begins to chip off around the design of the coin, and it leaves a jagged "doubling" all around the design and lettering. At first it starts out looking like minor doubling, but as it continues to chip and wear away you can get some pretty wild halo effects. The extra metal under the kings ear is a die chip; you see that particular spot chipped on every year from the late '40's through to 1952.

1947ML mortar set, Zoell H71n - probably one of the toughest ones to find. I am still hunting for a mint state one...

Thanks everyone . I thought it could be mortar set and maybe was hoping for double date . Why is this coin in mortar set hard to find ? Does this increase the value of the coin ?

Somewhat, it is a error, in some respects, maybe it is worth $5-$10 in that condition. Value only tends to be realized when more than one person wants it bad enough... If your intent is to sell, I might be willing to give it a home, yours looks like it could be nice enough for some good photos...

I not sure what you are looking at. I'm new here. Why did you think it was a double date? What's a mortar set? Thanks!

Your 47 cent is "the cover story" of the 1965 Zoell Variety Book. So that's a great find. ...but yours is also the Maple Leaf variety. Hey...! My book would make a nice partner with your coin...

Hello tofuburger . What is seen in this photo is the extra metal around the lettering in cent , Canada and 4 7 of the date where the dies did not cut clean .
