Sounds like I am getting a volunteer job at a vending machine distribution company.

It's been awhile since I have had any luck with this, but today I struck pay dirt at the local shopping mall's Coca Cola machine. On my first round of pocket change, I received a 1906 V nickel. It's hardly in top condition, but I'm still floored that it ended up in a vending machine. It's rare to find these in a roll, I never thought I would find one in a modern soda machine. A couple minutes later I found a proof-like (or perhaps it is a proof) 1966 Jefferson nickel. Either way, its a nice addition to my collection. People were definitely looking at me like I was crazy, but I think that it was worth it. I have been very busy over the past year, and have been unable to search rolls, but vending machines are quick and easy and fit into my schedule - societal norms be damned.

Thanks jbuck.
I have learned that this method rarely yields anything more than worn down clad, but it is still fun. When you do get a big hit, it is super exciting. :)

My first thought at reading the title of this old thread was that it referred to what you found in change when making a vending machine purchase. Never occurred to me that you could cycle through the machine change contents using the change return button. Guess a few interesting finds have been made. I actually got this quarter as change from a machine. I remember it well: I put in a dollar bill for a 65-cent bag of Cheetos and got a quarter and a dime back (plus the Cheetos). Definitely my best vending machine find!
