Today I picked up a couple of MS-64 Morgan dollars, an 1881-S and an 1882-S in very early PCGS holders. They were photographed side by side. The label on the front is actually a very pale green. I have a couple of the 2nd generation slabs which are stackable and the labels are a little darker. I believe these were the first generation holder and I haven't seen one of these for many, many years. Am I correct in that these are 1st generation holders?

The two dollars are actually quite nice and my photos don't do them justice. These will be for sale in the appropriate section and will have better images.

Indeed, those are 1st generation holders. Often called "rattlers" because the coins can rattle in them, they are highly regarded by PCGS aficionados.

They are first generation, unfortunately they are genuine. (There are counterfeits of this slab style which believe it or not are quite valuable.) Actually if you look around at coin shows you will find that the PCGS 1 slab is still pretty easily available. PCGS used this slab style for three years and they made a lot of them. (Compared to the NGC 1 slab that was only used for a month with maybe 20,000 slabs produced. The NGC 1 slab can now command a premium of as much as $4,100 just because of the slab shell. I've seen at least three sales at a $3,000+ premium and Sunday one sold for a $4,200 premium.) The truly rare PCGS slabs are the PCGS 6 and PCGS 9 (Regency slab). The PCGS 6 is not currently appreciated, but the PCGS 9 Regency slab will add a premium of $500 to $800 dollars.

There are not a whole lot of them left as PCGS was known for being much more strict back when they first started. Many of these coins have been cracked out and re submitted over the years. The ones that are still floating around are either coins that A)Are not worth re submitting as a gain of a point is not worth the fees, B)They have been held in long time collections or C)They are not seen as being good enough to crack out for a better grade. Over the years I have re submitted quite a few and some have come back 1,2 even 3 grades higher. The old holders are collectibles in themselves as BH1964 pointd out above. I have some that would probably upgrade but I am a fan of the older slabs and will probably just keep them as they are. I would caution anyone today from paying too much of a premium for a coin in a 1st Gen holder. A lot of sellers (read ebay) will tell you this coin is a sure upgrade if re submitted. A question I always ask myself is-If the coin was worth re submitting for a better grade, why wouldn't they do it themselves? Having said all of that-Your coins look clean enough to be 65s today as far as I can tell by the pics. Very nice coins. Probably too common to be worth a re submittal though. There will always be a high demand for these 1st Gen holders

Thanks to all of you for your comments. These two plus two more 1881-S MS-64's in 2nd generation holders just came out of an old collection about a week ago. I bought them from a friend who bought them from the original owner. These definitely look like they could easily upgrade to -65 if resubmitted which I may consider since the price difference between a -64 ($91.00) and a -65 ($175.00) for these two dates is $84.00. Prices quoted are from Numismedia, real world prices may be a little more or less. I paid $50.00 each for the four of them.
