I have a 1970 US mint set that my book the "orth American Coins & Prices" lists value of large date $11.25, and small date $70.
Please excuse my ignorance, but WHAT is the small date in this set and how do I know if that's the set I have?
Rest in Peace

It is the 1970-S cents that has a large and small date. Big difference between the two. Click on "Search Coin Community" upper left for more information.
Small date is the desirable one. I believe.

A little more than 10% of the mint set coins are small dates. Look at the bottom curl of the "9". if it comes up to be nearly horizontal it is the small date and if it points down toward the mint mark it's the large date. The first time you check a variety it's helpful to have both to compare.

Also keep an eye open for the S/S mint mark on the same coin. It appears in about 15% of sets.

The '70 mint set is interesting since there are so many potentially valuable coins in it and they haven't all been cherry picked.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
