1907 Indian Head Penny - Coin Community Forum

dnug80 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 03/20/2013 4:47 pm Just joined this forum and this is my first post. I found a 1907 Indian Head penny the other day and started looking it over. It's in fairly good condition and I am able to read everything from the front and back of the coin clearly except for the mint mark, which is what I have a question about. I have read that the 1907 ones were only minted in Philadelphia and therefore have no mint mark. Mine however, appears to be worn and be an S for the San Fransisco mint. Is this possible and it be an error or am I just seeing something that isn't there? Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated. I have not been able to take a good picture showing this or I would upload it but I am just curious as to if this is possible or not. Report this Post to the Staff

Coindog Pillar of the Community United States 917 Posts	Posted 03/20/2013 4:53 pm Yep, not having a mint mark makes it a Philly. The only years that were made in San Francisco are 1908 and 1909. You might be seeing a scratch or someone added the mint mark. Report this Post to the Staff
supgog Pillar of the Community Israel 2420 Posts	Posted 03/20/2013 4:54 pm It is highly unlikely that a San Fran mint mark could be on a genuine 1907 Indian. It is far more reasonable to assume that either it has no mint mark, or that it is a fake. Report this Post to the Staff
dnug80 New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 03/20/2013 5:02 pm Ok that's what I was thinking. The "S" is very heavily worn so I'm probably just seeing a scratch or other mark on it. I was just checking to see if it was possible that I had stumbled on a super rare coin. Just wishful thinking I guess.. Thanks for the help Report this Post to the Staff
