Hello everybody. I'm new and this Peace dollar has me scouring the internet looking for similar examples. Any input on why it looks the way it looks would be great. Thanks!

It may be a VAM and this thread should be moved over to that forum and request information on this.

Hello Luke. I have to admit there are some strange "features" on the obverse of your Peace dollar. While I am not familiar with the die varieties for this series, I'm sure some others on CCF are. In the meantime I would have to ask you to weigh this and check it with a magnet.

Welcome to the CCF!

The magnet suggestion is a good one. You might also weigh it. To my eye, the coin has an uncommon look. If it's genuine, you may have an intriguing variety. It's the surface "bubbles" that make me suspicious.

This coin doesn't look authentic to me. I think it may be a reproduction.

Thanks for the welcomes. I just weighed it -->26.78 grams and it is not magnetic. As for it being a VAM I looked and looked(granted I'm learning as I go) and found nothing matching it.

With the way this thing looks is there a possibility that it's due to extreme heat? I found this coin about a year ago on the edge of a fire pit used to burn the (wooden and valueless) contents of an old home. The coin was on the edge and I just assumed it was in the back of a dresser or cupboard and just missed. I only recently was messing with the coin and noticed it didn't look right.

I've seen bubbling very similar to that on cents that have been heated, Indian Head cents in particular. I could imagine that happening if it were heated uniformly, as in an oven or under a fire pit like you mention. My only guess is that there are tiny pockets of gas or air within the alloy that could cause this when heated. As the metal becomes malleable, the pockets expand from heat.

In my opinion, I don't see anything that would suggest that it is a fake. Especially given where you found it.

the bubble between T and Y is what first caused me concern when I first saw the coin but the weight seems to be good enough to be legit. Usually when you see bubbles like that its from a cast counterfeit coin. That feature should be mentioned on VW if there is anything that matches it I would believe but I still can't wrap my head around what would cause that when struck

Edit: I was going to go see if I could find anything that matched it but my eyes must be going bad or something because I can't even see if it has a MintMark on the coin or not from the pictures

Thanks for the input. Here's a high quality scan of where the mint mark should be. I have a high quality scan of both side's,being that there's a 100k upload limit I can add isolated sections of anything helpful.

Thanks for all the contributions. My intention is to sell this coin. I really don't want to misrepresent it when I go to do that. Should I do a post on the VAM section? Do you think I would get anything more definitive? I'm thinking I will sell it on ebay and appreciate all the knowledge you guys have shared.
