Yellowstone Quarter With Partial Gold-Colored Plating

jstave New Member United States 2 Posts	Posted 03/22/2013 12:14 am I know almost nothing about coins, but I got an odd quarter in some change today and I can't seem to find anything like it on the 'net (including this forum). Pictures of front and back are below. I found many mentions on-line of the 'Yellowstone National Park' quarter, and some that have the coin painted different colors, or plated entirely gold, but nothing that shows only part of it plated as can be seen in the first picture. The coin itself also feels a bit lighter in weight and the silver area is lighter in color than a regular quarter. Thank you in advance for any info or pointers anyone might be able to give. I kinda thought it was something like that, but don't see why anyone would go to the trouble -- with some of the text being filled in and all, it seems like it would take a fair amount of work. Even if the person doing it was successful with their scam, would it really be cost effective? Any notion about the metal in the rest of the coin? With it being a lighter color (the edge is all one color, not half-and-half silver and copper like most quarters), I'm wondering now if the whole thing is counterfeit. Report this Post to the Staff

basebal21 Bedrock of the Community 13014 Posts	Posted 03/22/2013 01:42 am Ive seen some of these before where theyre a platinum gold combo which is what my guess would have been, maybe silver. I highly doubt its a counterfit if from nothing else the economic side. Thats a lot of work for not a lot of money. At best those probably sold for 5 dollars a piece. If you had that kind of set up to make that youd be better off just pumping out the fake quarters and spending them, it would take forever before you got noticed doing that Report this Post to the Staff
