There was a coin show in town this weekend so I naturally made plans to attend. I invited my 16 year old nephew to come along because he has shown an interest and has been collecting on his own for awhile now. My 19 year old son is in town, home for college spring break, for the week. He said he wanted to go also. This in itself was a shock because he has never shown any interest at all. He is also VERY tight with his money. While I was combing through binders of currency at a dealers table, my son walked up and said, "Hey Dad, look what I just bought." That's when my jaw dropped. He pulled out a 2013 Silver Eagle and a 1oz Johnson/Matthey Silver Bar. He handed the Silver Eagle to me and said it was for me and then said that he was going to start to collect Silver Bars. Moral to the story I guess is, Never give up on trying to educate your kids. Even when you think they could care less, they actually are listening. I am still in shock!! And feel so proud!!

You know, you are so correct. College matures their minds in so many ways beyond just 'book work'. Both my children are in school right now and it is such a thrill seeing the changes occur. They leave as big eyed children and return mature, confident, caring adults. Best money I ever spent is on their education. Congrats on your boy, I'm sure he will continue to amaze you in more ways in the future, far beyond coin endeavors.

It's always great when you get your family involved in your interests. In my case, none of my sons were very interested, but my Grandson (5 years old) has shown a lot of interest. He has his own magnifying glass and helps me to sort coins by dates. Who knows if that interest will remain, but for now, it's a wonderful thrill...

I was sorting a bank bag of quarters for silver and my 7yo step daughter said she wanted to help. She was calling out the year on every coin asking if it was old enough; "1797?" "look at the bottom" "1820?" "look at the bottom" You get the idea.
She sorted about $5 worth while I did the other $495. Almost at the end, she says "1964?" "look at the.. wait, what?!" The only silver in the bag, she found it!
