Please help me identify the country, denomination, year and value of this Asian coin with square hole in center.

I have found contradictory info on the web. Indications that it is an ancient Japanese coin and other indication that Japanese coins do not have square holes, but Chinese coins do. So I'm confused.

Your coin is Japanese and appears to be a 4 mon issued between 1769/1820. This link will provide you with more detailed information:-

Tremendous! Thanks for the link. I was able to use the info at the link to enter Japan 4 Mon into NGCCoin to determine price.
Can you tell from the image I provide whether the nub at the top roof of the left "hou" character protrudes a little down through the lid of that character or not? That would help in classifying the coin further as "fuei" type or "Shouji" or "Correct Character"?

It's very hard to tell from your photo but I would suspect that, like my own, it is the most common Meiwa era coin.
