What is this coin?
All I know about it 100% is the date.
Is it real?
It is in a 2x2 sized for a Canadian quarter.
It appears to be silver.
Numbers and letters in the legend mean what?
Thanks in advance, B

It's a 1 Real and it looks real to me.

The legend reads:
1 R (1 Real) * G (Guanajuato mint) * date * M*J (assayer's initials) * 10 Ds (dineros) 20 Gs (granos)
The last two bits are the purity of the piece 90.27 fine silver

Catalog prices for these pretty far out of date so I wouldn't put much faith in those. Check ebay for completed sales prices. A combination of assayer and mint is going to give you some notion of how much this coin might go for. One of the sellers that I like is cincopicos. Their store usually has an array of 1/2, 1, 2, 4, and 8 reales for sale. My guess is that this coin would go for $20-30, possibly more.

Good luck and send me a pm when you list it. I would be very interested in bidding on it.
