Hello, I am new to the forum and relatively new to collecting morgans. I will skip the boring details but I am trying to get some kind of handle on AT vs. NT morgans. I prefer toned coins but everything I have read has not seemed to help my understanding much. I have included pics of a coin I have and would like any reaction. AT or NT? Maybe if I have something in my hand and get feedback from experienced people it will help. Thanks, Vito

to CCF vito22. I'm by no means an expert, but to me it looks like an old album or board toning. Nice looking Morgan!

The colour on the obverse is making me think AT.

toning is something that just takes time to learn how to spot between AT and NT coins. Sometimes when the coin doctors are good they can get an AT coin to progress the colors just like it would if it had done it naturally and it fools even the experts. There is a progression that takes place from color to color that happens throughout time (since I am not a toned coin collector I am not exactly sure what that progression is) and if that progression isn't there then chances are its AT. We do have some members that have a pretty good handle on detecting NT from AT but I am just not one of them. I do know its kind of hard to get a two sided NT coin so anytime you see toning on both sides you really need to look closer at the coin because the toning is usually started where the coin is in contact with something that causes the toning and both sides can't be touching the same area. There are instances where both sides are toned like if they were placed in a yellow envelope or something like that but still even these need to be looked at closely to determine if its NT or AT

Thank you for all the input. FYI, I got two opinions from local guys ( not sure of there qualifications), one also mentioned the two sided toning and said the reverse could be album toning while the obverse may or may not be natural, he couldn't say either way for sure. the other guy was a little indifferent but said it looked real to him. I guess the best somebody like me can do is learn to identify the obvious AT's and judge accordingly. I will keep studying the toned morgans since I find them more interesting than the others and hopefully develop an eye for NT vs. AT.
Thanks, Vito
