So I was getting my morning coffee and got this back in my change. My first thought was some poor sap used a proof coin as change since the portrait of the queen had that darker contrast you see in proofs, but it's magnetic so not silver. Then I thought uncirculated slipped in a roll but compared to my 2012 uncirculated set it looks even better than those! Can someone help?

Proof doesn't have to be silver.

When you say magnetic, do you mean that the whole coin is magnetic?

I just checked with a small magnet, only the outer rim is magnetic, the inner part isn't.

The coin looks to be specimen finish. The RCM started using the parallel lined background and brilliant field finish in 1996, so it could be.

awesome find I definitely concur with everyone else, definitely a specimen strike, and like the others I prefer the specimen strike to the proof and proof-like.

This is a specimen strike. However, this coin was most likely cut out from a proof-like set, given how much more common they are. In 1997, the Winnipeg Proof-like sets contained specimen-finish coins. Only the Ottawa sets from 1997 had proof-like surfaces.
