I can't figure out how to tell the year and composition of this coin. I'm pretty sure I've got the denomination right, but dating it escapes me. Thanks in advance.

SilverEye,

I have not taken the time to learn Arabic but the following two sites should prove helpful to you if you want to devote the time:

1) best for obtaining current and accurate pricing on non-US coins:

http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/Wo...e-Guide.aspx

2) best for attempting to ID any coin in case nothing is known about a coin:

http://www.coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq...in_ct_id=110

best of luck,

Learning Arabic wouldn't help With Iranian coins. Although Iran uses Arabic Script its language is Farsi not Arabic. Another way of putting this is: Learning Arabic to understand Iranian coins would be a little like learning Italian so as to be able to read German coins

Iranian coins also use "Persian numerals" which are slightly different to "normal Arabic" numerals, specifically, the numerals for 4, 5 and 6 are different. Iran also uses a different calendar to that of the rest of the Islamic world, so "normal" Islamic date converters don't help, either.

The date on this coin can be seen at the bottom of the non-Lion side. In this case, it's "1343", which converts to AD 1964.

If you know what country your coin comes from, you can use this website to convert the date. That website is specifically designed to be used for dates as they appear on coins. Just select the country and enter the characters as they appear on the coin.

I had an elementry school boy teach me how to write the numbers 1 through 10 in arabic.
That was a very long time ago.
We each had a twig in our hands, and we wrote the numbers down in the sand.
That was on a beach, on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea, near the town of Babolshah.

As most would know, from the numbers table in Krause,
the heart upside down is the number '5'.
