I was wondering what weight other members give to the scarcity of certain varieties as it pertains to the value.

Here's an example. I just picked up an 1829 N-4 in decent shape on ebay for $19. If it were an N-9, everybody and their brother would have been on it and it would have gone for at least 3 times as much. They are both R4, but I think N-4 is just a tad more scarce. The N-4 was listed as just an 1829, not specifically N-4.

So is it just the varieties that scarce AND are varieties listed in the RedBook that command a higher price? Personally, I seek out the scarcer coins (R4 and up), but is it just me and say 10 other people who give the scarcity any merit?

I pay attention to the variety when I'm considering a purchase but in most cases where the coin is below R4 I won't consider paying more for the rarity. However, I do think there's a good number of collectors that are really into collecting varieties.

The only exception to my rule is when the variety makes a big difference to me. I had a couple of 1795 large cents in my collection that were S76b plain edge but I really wanted to add a lettered edge thick planchet S73 variety R5. I paid dearly for it, but the variety made the difference and I was happy with the purchase.

Scarcity is important but popularity also drives the price on varieties. A popular variety can be high priced even if it's relatively common. Typically a scarce variety does not bring a significant premium unless it is as an R-5. I admit to being a sucker for the rare varieties though.
