It's a 1585 NB Lithuania Taler of Stephen Bathory. Whether it is real, a contemporary or modern fake I do not know. Expert opinion is required. Here is a 1586NB which sold for $27,000.

The one I linked to earlier was a copy I think (if google translate worked) and that realised Euro 4,833.

Thank you rooneydog. It's just in such good shape I wonder. Then again I never see fakes of this. I wish it was real. Guess I will have to wait and see.

Maybe worth the cost of sending to NGC unless we have an expert here ?

Might be worth posting again as 1585NB etc real or fake on the world forum

I'm not an expert, but I collect that genre, and my guess is that coin is probably fake. Most I have seen that are well struck as that one is still have uneveness epecially in potrait and notable die cracks. Such a coin would Sell for 15k or more in that condition.

There are tons of fakes of various European talers. Some really old, some new. You need to buy them from reputable (and knowledgable) dealers or in a major slab. The fakes have turned many collectors towards the fractionals and minor coinage which has been a hot area the last few years Davenport #8457.
