BC will be going back to the PST on April 1, and all coin purchases will be subject to 7% PST. These include pure silver coins which were not previously charged. The $20 for $20 coins will also be charged an extra 7%.

To those in the Vancouver area, this Saturday and Sunday will be the last chance to get tax free coins at the Vancouver Mint Boutique.

The Mint Boutique has the Wolf $20 for $20 coins available in unlimited quantities this weekend. Get them now without paying tax.

Brutal, they did the same with privately sold used cars, I wonder what else they will continue to tax, one more reason to ship to Bellingham, lol.

On a side note, it is actually cheaper to ship a package across Canada via US, than it is to ship from Canada. I recently shipped a dino coin for ~$13 CAD (Vancouver to Quebec), had I shipped it from Bellingham it would have cost ~$8.50 USD. I love my country, but the Canadian premium is getting a bit bothersome.

I got this information from the staff at the Vancouver Mint Boutique and other members of this forum.

The clerk could be wrong about tax on the $20 for $20 coins but not on other coins. They will be taxed.

I have nothing to worry about. I either buy mine from ebay or go to a coin store in the U.S. called Skagit coin. I don't live near any Canadian coin stores either.

I hope not, but it is strange because the mint website now has a 'tax free' sort in their coin selection?

Well, that sucks! Obviously, they're taxing our hobby as if it's a bad habit. I hope Michael Bloomberg doesn't get wind of this.

I think this is correct. There is no tax issue about $20 for $20. The other pure gold and silver coins from the mint will add PST from April 1, 2013 in BC.

What was the story in Ontario before the HST was introduced when it came to pure gold and silver coins? PST and/or GST applicable?

20 for 20 coins are tax exempt because they are a face value exchange. Same goes for the quarter and loonie circulation packs offerings.

If the sale is at FV, then there is no tax.

On the Mint's website, it states the following on $20 wolf coin:

Act now - this coin is expected to sell out rapidly!
Buy the commemorative coin that captures the haunting beauty of the wolf.

Top reasons to buy this coin today:

• Fine silver (99.99% pure)
• Strict limit of three coins per household
• No tax - GST/HST/PST exempt*
• No risk - satisfaction guaranteed or your money back

*Tax on shipping applies

So, there is NO taxes of any sort on the $20 for $20 coin.

The bird coin will still be 12%. Pure silver, gold platinum coins are PST applicable GST exempt. Bullion coins are tax free.
