Hey guys need your help.
When a coin is 1/25th ounce of .9999 gold... what size is it - a US dime? cent? nickle? quarter? etc.

Thanks,
mila_

PS: NUMBERS don't help me. Need it compared to a US coin.

The size depends entirely on the thickness. You can have a relatively large coin, that's wafer thin, or a tiny, thick coin. I know you hate numbers (so do I - they make my mind ache) but let's do the math.

The density of gold is 19.3 grams per cubic centimetre, or 0.6808 ounces per cubic centimetre. That means 1/25th of an ounce occupies 0.05875 cm3 of volume. A cylinder 1mm thick with a volume of 0.05875 cm3 will be 0.86 cm across - pretty darned small, smaller than a silver 3¢ or gold dollar. A wafer-thin coin, 0.1 mm thick, would be 2.73 cm across - a bit smaller than a half dollar. A dime-sized coin would be 1/4mm thick.

The short answer is, "it depends". Hope all the maths hasn't left you all goggle-eyed. .

From what I could find during a brief search, this coin ~13mm. A Lincoln Cent is 19mm for reference.

OldDan, 1/25 of a troy ounce is 1.24 grams. A US $2-1/2 gold piece is almost exactly the size of a dime, but weighs over three times as much as this coin (4.18 grams). If this coin really is the diameter of a dime, it must be a lot thinner. Kind of like a tired dime. I wouldn't use it as a screwdriver.....

Not sure but it appears you have the coin in order to take that photo. Now how do you know it's 1/25th of .9999 Gold or can you read Mongolian? If you do not have the coin, just take a trip to Mongolia, get change in Gold coins from a newsstand, measure it, come back here with the results. Of course you could also call the Mongolian embassy. Go to an international coin show and find one, measure it.

Question-Of--Coin-Sizes...

Question-Of--Coin-Sizes...

Now, I just receive some Pilipinas coins from crzy3by and one of the coins is a 5 sentimo which looks to me about the same size as this gold coin. Compared with a US dime for size, the 5 sentimo is a bit smaller - so I guess the gold coin would be about the same as the 5 sentimo. That is one really TINY puppy ! ! !

Although very small I like it. The design, the yellow (gold) color and the fact that it would be the only gold coin I would ever get and it is also my mom's zodiac sign and in her favorite color. But, I haven't committed to it yet - still have time to make up my mind. Will continue searching, who know maybe I'll find something better then this one.

Thank you all for your help,
mila_

Hi guys,
Since the coin in question(above)is very tiny, I am leaning towards a Silver Gilded - Year of the Dog in 1oz (or 2oz if minted). I have been searching and haven't had much luck in locating a seller in the US for this coin. Please lead me towards a location.

Thanks,
mila_

thg, please read my post again. I said "it was closer to a dime than any of the other coins Mila_cent mentioned." I never claimed it to be the same size, nor did I say to use it as any type of tool.

muckeye..Thank you. I am only interested in the gilded version.
I do have one (Horse) purchased from Terry, but when I saw the gilded versions I liked those much more. So I may go on to collecting the gilded version for the new year (2008). Is this version only minted in a 1oz size?

Old Dan, I didn't mean anything offensive by my comments. If tights2 is correct on a diameter measurement of 13 mm for this coin, it is slightly smaller than a 3 cent silver, and almost exactly the diameter of a gold dollar. Gold content by weight is similar to a gold dollar (after accounting for the difference in fineness), so it is a thin coin compared to a dime.

No, I would not use a PF69 gold coin for a screwdriver, but I have used a lot of nickels and dimes for this in the past. I have yet to find a coin which can step in for a Phillips head, though. And sadly I have seen some great date Seated quarters which have the tell-tale bend from being used as a tool of some kind.
