I have two questions about current USA penny coin:

1. Why does the penny coin use lower register "o" among all caps in "UNITED STATES oF AMERICA"? Other US coins seem to use all caps, without exception.

2. I have a penny coin with nothing stamped on either side - just a blank. How unusual is this?

it is almost a daily thing to get a blank planchet in rolls of uncirculated cents today. The QC at the mint has gone the way of the dinosaur. as for the small O in the of. I don't have a clue maybe the cap O didn't look right to them.

I agree with garylcsr.

The lower case "o" is just standard English useage practice in the U.S. in this type of phrase.

Welcome to the forum by the way. Post often. It's a great forum!!

Thank you for your comments! It is interesting that all the other coins do not use the smaller case "o" except the penny.

I've gone through many many cent rolls and have yet to find a blank planchet. I've had more luck finding Buffalo nickels in nickel rolls.

I read about that once. That small o is in there because thats the way the designer made it. It wasn't explained why he did that, maybe just feeling goofy, I dunno, but thats the way it was designed and I guess nobody at the mint had a problem with it so its still there.

TSOTL has it right, it was just artistic license by Gasparro. Interestingly the lower case o in oF on the cent gets questioned frequently but in all the years I have been collecting I have only seen that question asked once or twice about the same thing on the Franklin half dollar, the only other place it was done on US coins.

Maybe because there are fewer of these half dollars than pennies.
